Americans have gradually accepted the idea that they are being watched by surveillance cameras practically everywhere they go or visit. Many Americans have taken to installing their own video surveillance systems in or around their homes and businesses to protect or at least record their environment and the people they meet or greet.
Digital technology has now taken surveillance to a whole new level in the USA and in other countries and is just now meeting the goals of the Federal Government of the United States. The most prominent and well-funded organization by far in the United States is the National Security Agency or NSA whose infrastructure covers the size of a small city.
The NSA is not subject to any of the Freedom of Information Act statutes and generally acts with impunity as it increasingly has built its infrastructure to the point where it is able to watch, observe or listen to every man, woman and child that they know about living in the United States. Not much is known about the NSA amongst the general public.
Americans are told that it has their best interests in mind and to date, no one has been able to prove differently. Most people would rather just ignore the NSA just as long as they remain out of the public eye. And truth be told, most Americans are too busy to care. Here is the Discovery Channel Program about the NSA
Here is an interesting expose on the NSA sponsored by the ACLU (the watchdog of what's left of American 'rights & freedoms' as once guaranteed by something called the 'Constitution of the United States' and another interesting historical document called the 'Bill of Rights').
